Nevertheless it is possible to speak about some physical qualities, which are typical for Saami. One of them is rather short stature.

By the main index Saami concern to be brahitsefalum, with average forehead, by the pressed nose, basically with an average nose. Ears and lips are average in sizes, eyes aperture does not differ from the Russian North or Karelia. Trunk is large both in length and width; there are wide shoulders and wide grasp of a breast. Long hands have long fingers; legs are normal. General appearance is strong and thickset. Hair is darkly and light brown; eyes are straight lines of grayish colour. Colour of skin is white.

On the data of the Kola expedition in 1928, the average sizes of the anthropological indexes for Kola Saami compose: growth (standing) - 1560 mm, length of a hand - 682 mm, length of legs - 715 mm, head index - 83, obverse index - 78, nose index - 71.

The Esco Natanen conclusion deserves the special attention that modern Saami are higher than ancestors who lived 100-300 years ago. The probable reason was crossbreeding with Russian and western neighbours.

In modern conditions, however, it is not a main thing in changed Saami external features. Well-heated homes and strong warm footwear and clothes, variety in food and development of personal hygiene, physical trainings considerably have reduced various diseases and consequently could no stop improvement the physical Saami type in Russia.
